What is a chiropractor?

That's why we call the tecniques we use adjustments, because we adjust these imbalances. We also try and look at the entire person and not just an organ or symptom. We take a whole person approach and often discuss diet, weight, smoking, medications, and also, mental/emotional stress. All these and more affect persons Muskuloskeletal health.

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is a vast profession that employs many varied tecniques to correct spinal and extremity disfunction (mainly in their movement capabilities). The number of tecniques available is too lengthyto name here, but the most common are Adjustment by hand, instrument, as well, many Chiropractors use Physical Therapy modalities, and Contemporary Dry Needling Therapy.

Are chiropractors doctors?

Yes. Just like dentists, and podiatrists are Doctors, Chiropractors are also Doctors that have our own specialty. We are licensed and go through very intensive training and testing.

What is the history of chiropractic care?

Chiropractic was discovered by an energy healer in 1898 in Davenport Iowa. He helped a black man who had a bony misalignment in his upper back by restoring the bone to it's normal healthy position and it is said, the mans hearing was restored. Now, these days, we would never claim be able to restore someones hearing, but, Dr Stutman has had great results in helping to alleiviate back pain, neck pain and headaches in his 30 years of practicing. And still going strong!!!

What does a chiropractor do?

As explained above, there are too many ways Chiropractors work on patients to go into, but all are geared to restore joint balance and function. One definition of life in movement, so you could say we restore the natural life movement to ones joints and we then step back and let the bodies naturalhealing intelligence do the rest.

Are chiropractors useful?

Does chiropractic work?

Chiropractic works to break up negative joint movement and that helps a person have an opportunity to function and live a better quality of life. So, Yeah, it works!!! And of course, a Doctor of Chiropractic knows when to refer to another Healthcare provider when needed. Our number one mission is to 'do no harm' patient safety!

Are chiropractors safe?

See previous question. We are trained to diagnose and treat spinal and other joint conditions, and when not to treat, or when to treat something in a different way. We refer out when needed. I tell my patients, "I'll tell you if I think I can help you, and I'll tell you if I think I can't. If you need another kind of Doctor, I'll tell you that also".Patient safety comes first!

Are there chiropractic adjustment side effects?

Most side effects to Chiropractic treatments are positive, better ROM (range of motion), a feeling of freedom and wellness in the joints and other positive effects. Sometimes there may be some soreness, but, often that can be part of the patients healing progession. Serious side effects to Chiropractic are rare to never.

How many chiropractic sessions do you need?

It depends on many factors like extent of injury, age of patient, patients health and other medical conditions, and the goals the patient is seeking from care. Your Chiropractor should be able to give you an idea of how many sessiion after an evaluation.

How much does chiropractic care cost?

Chiropractors accept many insurances, and often have cash plans for those without health, Auto or Work insurance. So the cost depends on these factors

As I mentioned, there are just too many to notate, but most common are the adjustments that treat the lack of joint movement in which the Doctor uses his hands to restore function.

Can I get chiropractic care during pregnancy?

Yes, Chiropractic can really be helpful with the low back pain and sciatica often associated with pregnancy. Relief is around the corner in most cases.

How does a chiropractor help lower back pain?

Chiropractors help low back pain by restoring the joint movement of the low back and often may help the nerve pressure and symptoms associated with low back pain

How does a chiropractor help neck pain?

Cervical (Neck) adjustment delivered with care help to mobilize restricted joint, stretch shortened muscles, break up muscle spasms, and may reduce pressure on nerves. It can be a true liberating experience!

How does a chiropractor help sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition of this very thick nerve called the Sciatic Nerve. This nerve runs through the piriformis muscle. Sometimes this muscle gets too tight and squeezes the nerve. This nerve pressure causes pain that may run from the buttocks to the back ot the leg. All that being said, we need to work on that muscle to reduce the pressure on the sciatic nerve, this can then reduce the pain associated with Sciatica.

What types of pain do chiropractors treat?

We generally treat muskuloskeletal pain; pain affecting the muscles and other tissues, nerves and joints. We treat shoulder, knee, wrist, elbow and ankle pain as well.

Do chiropractic adjustments hurt?

Usually Chiropractic adjustment cause a feeling of relief. For many the Chiropractic adjustment feels like taking a thorn our of ones thumb, its a great relief. There are occasions when there is slight pain associated with the adjustment, but this is rare and usually goes away quickly.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Chiropractic adjustments are extremely safe. On an extremely rare occasion (as in all health care professions) there may be some sort of injury. Overall, you are MUCH safer with Chiropractic than you are with 'invasive' medicine. Life always has risks, that's the nature of the beast, but you can feel confident being in the hands of licensed Chiropractor!

Why do adjustments sometimes make a popping sound?

To make a long story short, Joints have capsules and when a Chiropractor moves a joint a gas may be released and that's the theory of where the 'cracking' noise comes from. It sounds like popcorn and usually feels GREAT!

Are all patients adjusted the same way?

Absolutely not! As I have mentioned earlier, we have lots of treatments at our disposal and we design a treatment reginime that is safe for the individual person we are working on. For example, an elderly person may be treatment with a light force instrument, whereas a 20 year old may be treated with a more rapid adjustment using the Chiropractors hands.

Will a chiropractic adjustment completely remove back pain?

It is possible to get complete relief with ongoing Chiropractic care, although one treatment only will probably not do the trick. Spinal adjustments effectiveness build on the repetition of treatments, usually. There are many health factors that may make healing take longer than usual, like diabetes, joint diseases and obesity, for example

Can I learn to adjust myself?

I'd recommend not trying. Would you do foot surgery on yourself instead of going to the Podiatrist. Chiropractors are trained professionals and experts in adjusting their patients. Unfortunately, many of my clients are the patients that adjust their own necks, for example, and stretch their own ligments out. Then theirs neck bones don't hold in a healthy position, causing them even more neck pain. So, I wouldn't!

Will I be required to remove my clothing at my appointment?

Some Chiropractors gown patients, others don't. As healthcare practitioners we need to inspect the areas of complaint, while at the same time being sensitive to the patients right to privacy. At Stutman Chiropractic we rarely gown clients, and if we do, there is a 'medically necessary' reason of doing so.

Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?

Yes, of course, as mentioned above, there are many methods and with children, a more gentle method needs to be utilized.

What type of education and training do chiropractors have?

A Chiropractor needs to have a Bachelors of Science degree, and after that 4 years of extensive training, testing, take multiple National Board exams and then a State Board exam in some state. It's extensive!

Do you speak spanish?

Are any of your offices open evenings and/or weekends?

Yes, Our Laurel office is open until 8 PM Monday-Thursday!

Our Baltimore of office is open on Sundays and many evenings each week and

Our Takoma Park office is open til 6pm most days!

We try hard to be as convenient as possible for our clients. You shouldn't have to miss work in order to get Chiropractic treatment!!!

Do you offer same day appointments?

On most days we can accommodate New Patients the same day they want and need Chiropractic care!!!

Do your doctors do any specialized treatments other than standard Chiropractic adjustments?

Our Doctors are Certified to provide Physical Therapy (PT) treatments and are, as well, Certified and approved to provide Contemporary Dry Needling therapy!!!

Do you treat knees, ankles, shoulders, and other extremities?

Yes we do!!! Since we are licensed to perform PT modalities and Contemporary Dry Needling therapy we are well equipped to handle most musculoskeletal issues a patient may have.

Do you offer a complimentary consultation with a Doctor of Chiropractic?

Yes we do. The consultation is a short 5-10 minute verbal discussion with the potential client to get an idea of what the issue is and whether or not we can help. If we can't help, we may be able to recommend another kind of Doctor that may be able to assist.
